Recently, one of our users asked us questions about how to optimize a robots.txt file to improve SEO. The robots.txt file tells search engines on how to search your website. In this article, we will show you how to create a complete robots.txt file.
What is a robots.txt file
Robots.txt is a text file that website owners can use to find out how search engines crawl and list pages on their site.
It is usually stored in the root directory, which is known as the main folder of your website. The main file format of a robots.txt file is as follows:
User-agent: [user-agent name] Disallow: [URL string not to be crawled] User-agent: [user-agent name] Allow: [URL string to be crawled] Sitemap: [URL of your XML Sitemap]
In the example above, we have allowed search engines to search for the contents of our upload folder.
In the next line, we have denied access to the WordPress admin folder.
Finally, we provided the URL of our XML site map.
Do you need a Robots.txt file for your WordPress site for SEO
If you don’t have a robots.txt file, search engines will still search and list your website. However, you will not be able to tell search engines which pages or folders should not be searched.
When you first create a blog, you won’t make much of an impact and you won’t have much content.
However your website is growing and you have a lot of content, you probably want to have more control over how your website gets up and indexed.
Search bots have an empty quota for each website.
This means that they reject a certain number of pages during a crawl session. If they don’t empty all the pages on your site, they’ll come back in the next session and crawl.
This can slow down the registration process for your website.
You can fix this by allowing search bots to try to drop unnecessary pages such as your WordPress admin pages, plugin files, and theme folders.
Save your search quota by disabling unnecessary pages.
Another reason to use the robots.txt file is when you want to stop search engines from indexing a post or page on your website.
This isn’t the safest way to hide content from the public, but it will help you avoid displaying search results.
What should do an ideal Robots.txt file
Many popular blogs use a very simple robots.txt file. Their content may vary depending on the needs of a particular site.
User-agent: * Disallow: Sitemap: http://www.example.com/post-sitemap.xml Sitemap: http://www.example.com/page-sitemap.xml
The robots.txt file allows all robots to browse all content and links them to map XML web site offers.
For WordPress sites, we recommend the following rules in the robots.txt file:
User-Agent: * Allow: / wp-content / uploads / Disallow: / wp-content / plugins / Disallow: / wp-admin / Disallow: /readme.html Disallow: / refer / Sitemap: http://www.example.com/post-sitemap.xml Sitemap: http://www.example.com/page-sitemap.xml
Adding sitemaps to the robots.txt file makes it easy for Google bots to find all the pages on your site. It offers search boots to display all the images and WordPress files.
